Believe it or not, online registration for our Spring 2010 House League Program will be starting this week. Keep your eyes on this space for more details.
The Town of Canmore has recently unveiled its plan for a multi-purpose facility -- the so-called Multiplex -- which will likely be built beside the Provincial Building along Railway Avenue. Although initial plans do not call for an indoor soccer field in the Multiplex, the design of the facility is not yet etched in stone.
If you believe the Bow Valley needs an indoor sports facility, please make your voice heard! We envision an indoor turf facility as benefiting far more than soccer players: baseball, football, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, and lawn bowling/bocce are just a few ideas that come to mind. The possibility of constructing a field that converts into an indoor tennis facility is also possible.
Nevertheless, there is significant rationale for a soccer-only field. The Canmore Minor Soccer Club is far and away the largest minor sports program in the Bow Valley. Over the past several years, our programs have seen participant numbers rise steadily. Last year more than 500 children played in our spring house league. Another 250 played fall soccer, close to 100 played indoor winter soccer (a number that would surely rise if we had a proper indoor facility, and not school gyms), and this year for the first time we had some 60 kids play competitive soccer with our traveling Avalanche teams. Indeed, our U12 boys team won the Tier IV Provincial Championship in July. Next year we hope to host our first-ever competitive tournament. If any club ever had strength in numbers, it’s ours.
Although the Multiplex may ultimately not be the venue for indoor turf fields, Town Council is considering a significant renovation of the current Rec Centre once the Multiplex is completed. We believe a multi-purpose indoor turf field that supports soccer must be a part of this. While the Town will likely hold a different set of hearings on this issue, it is vital that they hear our voices now. This will help ensure that future generations of Canmore’s soccer players, both young and old alike, have a place to play during our long Rocky Mountain winters.
Please keep your eyes peeled for public hearings regarding the Multiplex. If you cannot attend a hearing, you can e-mail your comments to Rod deLeeuw at the Town of Canmore (rdeleeuw@canmore.ca).
